Details
This striking piece of contemporary theatre brings together video and audio testimonies in a dark and mesmerising solo performance by the artist himself. Dance rarely deals so directly with the uneasy question of war and violence. Here Ouramdane takes us from his personal experience as the son of Algerian-born parents - immigrants to France and themselves affected by conflict and torture in the 1960s - to the collective story relating to all of us about the nature of identity in our globalised world. Working at the margins of dance, documentary and multimedia art, Ouramdane compels us to face the brutality of colonisation, the complex nature of displacement and the reality of our multilayered contemporary identities. In French and English with subtitles, Loin... 'is an engrossing work of art, devoid of any explicit agenda, frequently ambiguous and often touching on the ineffable - a one-man show about the collective unconscious' (New York Times).
