Details
A world premiere of a new work by Qudus Onikeku, with spoken word by Zena Edwards. My Exile is in My Head was Qudus Onikeku's first solo work, inspired by the prison writings of Nigerian Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka. After ten years living in Europe, Onikeku has recently returned to live in Nigeria. In Exile Remixed, with text written by London-based spoken-word artist Zena Edwards, Onikeku revists his early work from the perspective of one returning to his homeland. Born in Lagos, Qudus Onikeku has become renown as one of the leading figures of the new generation of artistic voices from Africa. A choreographer, dancer, writer and curator, his work explores themes of identity, memory and forms of exile. For the past decade, underpinned by his traditional Yoruba philosophy, Onikeku has developed a movement identity that fuses dance and acrobatics, and combines it with other influences such as hip hop, capoeira, tai chi and contemporary dance.
