Nederlands Dans Theater 1, 'the flagship', was founded in 1959 and is highly successful all over the world. The dancers are all soloists and are not divided into categories, all have equal status. Bella Figura roughly translated as ‘put on a brave face’, captures the physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual aspects of humankind and reveals why dancers choose to dance. Featuring a medley of Baroque music and music by living German composer Lukas Foss, it contains striking images that are punctuated with flashes of humour. Speak for Yourself is set to Bach's serene Kunst der Fuge. Eight dancers perform a series of intriguing duets and solos, restless movement contrasts with magical stillness in a rain-drenched and smoke-filled setting. Walking Mad is set to Maurice Ravel's Bolero for orchestra and Arvo Fur Alina for piano. His earthy, expressive style of movement allows him to portray the shy and helpless traits of man with hearty sentiment and infectious humour.
