Set in an Indian temple and originally choreographed by Marius Petipa. The ballet tells the story of the doomed love between Nikiya, a temple dancer, (also known as a bayadere), and Solar - a princely warrior. As the drama unfolds, the ballet features the most spectacular set pieces, including the mesmeric Kingdom of the Shades, which has been called one of the choreographic glories of the world.
