d(ARE) / Here Be Lions will be the first UK presentation by Theatre of Europe, and is an experiential immersive production. The work was borne out of a collaboration between French artists, choreographer and dancer Sandrine Buring and playwright and director Stephane Olry. d(ARE) is a dance piece, performed inside a suspended glass laboratory bell jar. Here Be Lions refers to the term used in cartography for unchartered territories and is a play in response to the dance movement, voicing eight different characters: a writer, his colleague (a dancer), two of the medical staff and four young patients at the hospital. These patients are Kelly, a teenage Martiniquaise; Tamara, an older but still young woman of Near-Eastern origin; a pugnacious young boy called Mohammed; and a fourth child who remains undescribed but whose enigmatic expression made the playwright think of the Queen of England, and who he voices accordingly.
