Details

The enigmatic Coppelia, believed to be the daughter of the reclusive toy-maker Coppelius, sits on her father's balcony, seemingly oblivious to the world around her. Her neighbour, the capricious Swanilda, is angered by Coppelia's aloof attitude, and becomes even more alarmed when her fiance Franz begins to take more than a passing interest in the girl. When she breaks into Coppelius's house to confront her rival, she soon realises that Coppelia is not quite what she seems. A new staging of Ninette de Valois' production created in 1954.

Coppelia is a jewel, placed in the prettiest of late 19th-century settings, and the version the Royal Ballet owns is unique and fascinating. Dame [Ninette De Valois] staging has been restored to us in joyous and welcome style.

One thing I found rather shocking: the inability of our fit, athletic Royal ballerinas to hold a plain arabesque on a flat foot without wobbling like amateurs. [Mikayo Yoshida] and [Leanne Benjamin] both struggled with theirs, and the successive ladies blessed with the pious Prayer solo were just as bad. De Valois would never have stood for it.

Historically interesting, certainly, but I suspect today s audiences will find it a quaint throwback of mixed blessings. Osbert Lancaster s children s storybook designs are delightfully rustic and faux naif, vibrant with whimsy and period charm. But much of the staging is fusty and dramatically tired.
