African dance company. A spectacular new double bill by choreographer Bode Lawal. Sango takes its name and inspiration from a West African god of thunder. Majestic, fiery and brave yet temperamental and destructive, this new piece is a post-modern interpretation of ritualistic Nigerian dance. In contrast, Iyanu is a stirring and soulfully seductive piece full of hypnotic and tantalising movement rooted in West African dance and spirituality. Sango - the sacred god of thunder - is respected in Yorubaland (West Africa), parts of North America and Cuba - as a brave, majestic and destructive character - the perfect character to be brought to life on stage through the gracious movements of Sakoba Dance Theatre. Iyanu (translated as Miracle): (26 minutes) - Miracle promises to take the audience to places they’ve never been to before and acknowledge a higher level of understanding about African dance today - using serene, soulful and angelic powers of performance. The abstract force will tease people’s minds like a magnet, the result being adulation acknowledging Sakoba’s ground-breaking genius and allowing them enough breathing space to realise the evolutionary foundations being set for the next generation of dance.
