The Australian Ballet will present one of George Balanchine's most loved works, Jewels, as part of its 60th Anniversary Celebration season at Covent Garden. George Balanchine's masterpiece Jewels is inspired by three unique periods in the history of ballet and in George Balanchine's life and career, journeying through the romanticism of France in Emeralds, New York City's jazz age in Rubies and the majesty of Imperial Russia in Diamonds. In a twist on the traditional ballet form, this full-length work of three movements is not a story ballet, but a plotless, abstract work which distils the artform to pure movement and will demonstrate both the classical precision and stylistic versatility of The Australian Ballet's dancers. The individual movements of Jewels are scored by the strikingly distinct music of three composers: Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
