Renowned for its soul-stirring high energy performances, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is one of America's greatest companies. Taking popular music, gospel and jazz and mixing the classical vocabulary of ballet with a contemporary style, the Company of 30 dancers radiate a slick and sassy energy that is purely infectious. SUITE OTIS (1971) - Choreographed by George Faison - Otis Redding’s sassy, sizzling music sets the stage for George Faison’s playful battle of the sexes. The yearning sensuality of such timeless songs as 'Satisfaction,' 'Try a Little Tenderness,' 'I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,' and other favorites bursts through this sexy, charming and witty suite. Running time: 20 mins IN/SIDE (2008) - Choreographed by Robert Battle - The vivid emotions of Nina Simone’s 'Wild is the Wind' play out in Robert Battle’s gripping solo. The bold, unrestrained style that has become his signature is evinced in this visceral cry of pure physicality. Running time: 8 mins DANCING SPIRIT (2009) - Choreographed by Ronald K. Brown - Ronald K. Brown pays tribute to Judith Jamison’s profound influence with a new work that echoes the title of her autobiography. Set to music by Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis, Radiohead and War, Brown’s evocative choreography uses movement from Cuba, Brazil and the United States to conjure dancing spirits who embody Jamison’s elegance, vision, dignity and generosity. Running time: 32 mins REVELATIONS (1960) - Choreographed by Alvin Ailey - Alvin Ailey said that one of America’s richest treasures was the cultural heritage of the African American- 'sometimes sorrowful, sometimes jubilant, but always hopeful.' This enduring classic is a tribute to that heritage and to Ailey’s genius. Using African American religious music--spirituals, song sermons and holy blues--this suite fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. This season the Company celebrates 50 years of Revelations, seen by more people around the world than any other modern dance. Running time 38 mins Total running time including two 20 minute intervals: 2 hours 20 minutes
