UBS Soundscapes: Nielsen archiveNielsen described the theme of his Fourth Symphony - the ‘Inextinguishable’ - as the life force, the unquenchable will to live. This dramatic work (1916) is dominated by a mighty battle between two sets of timpani. Haydn’s expressive Symphony No 97 was composed and premiered in London in 1792. Mozart’s Piano Concerto is one of six he wrote in 1784, and infectiously appealing. Even his pet starling learned to whistle part of the finale.
