The Black, Black Earth - Songs of Love and Death: Schubert, Schumann, Mahler and Wolf. archiveThe German lieder tradition has produced some of the most beautiful and enduring songs by some of the greatest composers of all time. This is music that plumbs the very deepest emotions: love and despair, and longing to the point of madness. Each song is a mini-drama relating the landscape of the human heart to the emotion of the natural world. Because the relationship between words and music is so close in these songs, the lieder will be sung in the original German and accompanied with readings and spoken translations in English. The performance lasts approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.
