Conceived and written by Andrea Baker, a British American who began her illustrious career with the San Fransisco Opera, Sing Sistah Sing! honours some of the greatest African American singers including; Marian Anderson, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday. Taking you through the incredible journey these women (and many more) faced to pave the way for artists such as herself, Sing Sistah Sing! showcases gospel, opera, jazz, blues, even a little bit of disco and some rollicking piano playing! The show brilliantly weaves together these women's brave struggles in the civil rights movement and their fight for artistic freedom at home and abroad. Some have chosen opera, jazz or blues to express their inner truth, but at the heart of the story is that all African American women carry in their souls and voices the sounds of their ancestors' songs of the plantation.
