Details

Part of the BBC Proms. Following his appearance with the Bamberg SO (Prom 18), Jonathan Nott returns with the GMJO, with a pair of astronomically related works - Ligeti's nebular Atmosphères and Strauss's visionary Also sprach Zarathustra - famously used on the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. (The astronomical theme continues in tonight's Late Night Prom.) Leading German baritone Matthias Goerne sings Mahler's harrowing set of meditations on infant mortality. Composed exactly a century ago and premiered at the 1912 Proms by Henry Wood, Schoenberg's Five Orchestral Pieces contain his first painterly experiments in shaping melodies from colours, not pitches. Approx finish time: 21:10. Broadcast at 19:30 on BBC Four and live on BBC Radio 3. There will be an interval.
