Details
One of today's leading Beethoven interpreters, Paul Lewis begins his cycle of all five piano concertos, partnered tonight by the orchestra and conductor with whom he recently recorded them. The First and Fourth concertos contrast Beethoven's early rhythmic drive with later introspective insight, while two overtures convey the drama of Goethe's heroic Egmont, killed for railing against political oppression, and of Prometheus's Creatures, formed with the help of fire from the gods. The BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor Jiri Belohlavek revive the time-honoured tradition of Beethoven Nights at the Proms. Finish time: approx. 21:05
