Prom 56 - Minnesota Orchestra archivePart of the BBC Proms. Osmo Vänskä, whose enthusiastic following in the UK dates from his tenure as Chief Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (1996-2002), returns for two Proms with the Minnesota Orchestra, which has seen a revival under his music directorship since 2003. Tonight the cinematic incidental music imagined by anniversary composer Samuel Barber for a scene from Shelley's Prometheus Unbound contrasts with the expansive splendour of Bruckner's 'Romantic' Symphony. Young American cellist Alisa Weilerstein makes her Proms debut in the first of Shostakovich's two concertos honed around the skill and and stamina of the great Mstislav Rostropovich. Finish time: approx. 21:50
