Part of the BBC Proms. Our celebration of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra's 10th anniversary ends with Beethoven's only foray into the operatic form. Fidelio is at once a passionate protest against political injustice and a paean to the power of human love. Conducted by Daniel Barenboim, it is sung in German by an international cast, using the English narration written by the orchestra's co-founder, the late Edward Said, in which the opera's heroine describes the events of the day in which she single-handedly rescued her husband from illegal incarceration and summary execution. There will be one interval. Approx finish time: 22:15. Broadcast at 20:10 on BBC Two and live on BBC Radio 3.
