The brilliantly virtuosic Arditti Quartet and a conductor and orchestra acclaimed for their interpretations of Mahler join forces in the UK premiere of Helmut Lachenmann's Tanzsuite mit Deutschlandlied. Previously unheard at the Proms, the blistered, metallic timbres and subtle textures of Lachenmann's ?musique concr?te instrumentale' unsettle and transfix, creating an abrasive yet alluring sound-world ideally suited to the Ardittis and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. Written over two summers in 1901 and 1902, Mahler's Fifth Symphony concludes the programme, its famous Adagietto a love-letter to the composer's wife, Alma. Finish time: approx. 21:55
