Details
Part of the BBC Proms. A decade in the making, Birtwistle's 'lyric tragedy' was the culmination of a long-standing obsession with the Orpheus myth. To mark the composer's 75th birthday, the BBC SO presents its central act - in which Orpheus journeys to the Underworld through a series of 17 arches - contrasting its dazzling complexity with the classical poise of Stravinsky's ballet Apollo. The opener by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood won the Radio 3 Listeners' Award at the 2006 British Composer Awards. Approx. finish time: 21:55
