Prom 31 - BBC Symphony Orchestra archivePart of the BBC Proms. The BBC Symphony Orchestra's Conductor Laureate Sir Andrew Davis conducts a typically wide-ranging programme whose pairings represent two musical homages. According to Messiaen, 'Mozart always smiled. His music also smiled.' Hence the title of French composer's tribute, written for the Mozart bicentenary of 1991. Parry's elegy to Brahms, whom he regarded as 'the last of the great German heroes of musical art', precedes Brahms's Fourth Symphony, whose final movement Passacaglia influenced Parry's 'English' Symphony. Finish time: approx. 21:50
