Details
Part of the BBC Proms. Oliver Knussen, the BBC SO's new Artist-in- Association, introduces his latest piece, due to be premiered by The Cleveland Orchestra in May. He also gives the first Proms performance of Helen Grime's dramatic evocation of the electric atmosphere before a storm. Stravinsky's 1936 ballet Jeu de cartes is a musical poker game in three 'deals', ending with the Joker trounced by a royal flush. In the second part of his Roman trilogy, Respighi takes us on a dawn-todusk tour of the city's most famous fountains; while, in orchestrating Balakirev's 'oriental fantasy', Casella propelled an already virtuosic keyboard piece into even more exotic extremes. Approx finish time: 21:35
