Details
Part of the BBC Proms. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales launches our cycle of Schumann symphonies with the First, whose freshness and drive reflect the productive frenzy that seized its composer around the time of his marriage. It's preceded by the stirring overture to the Cherubini opera which Brahms hailed as 'the highest peak of dramatic music'. Written for tonight's soloist, Simon Holt's percussion concerto was partly inspired by the table of tools kept by his great-uncle, a taxidermist. The perky adventures of Strauss's mythical rogue forms a brilliantly coloured conclusion. Finish time: approx. 21:05
