Details
The Sorcerer's Apprentice was Dukas' first orchestral work, and La Péri was the last, written for Diaghilev and tinged with brilliant colours suited to its exotic scenario about a prince in search of a magical lotus flower. Mozart's piano concerto was one of the three he composed while working on The Marriage of Figaro. Its limpid scoring and deeply poetic slow movement, which takes the lilting form of sicilana, give it an atmosphere unique among his many concertos. Rimsky-Korsakov's suite Scheherazade continues the Oriental theme, taking tales from the Arabian Nights and dressing them in gorgeous orchestral colours to make a satisfying musical frieze.
