Martin, one of the country's most prolific recitalists and a favourite among audiences and musicians alike, will play Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto and also conduct Wagner's Mastersingers Overture, as Hull Phil hands him the baton as a 60th birthday present. Martin shares his 60th birthday year with Hull Philharmonic's musical director, Andrew Penny, who marks the occasion by selecting the evening's programme. A champion of British music, Andrew has chosen Symphonic Variations by Hubert Parry, and Brigg Fair, which he regards as one of the finest works by Yorkshire-born Frederick Delius. Before the performance, the original folk song on which the latter piece was based will be sung unaccompanied by Brigg folk singer Tom Glossop. Hull Philharmonic Orchestra website.
