Martin, one of the country's most prolific recitalists and a favourite among audiences and musicians alike, will play Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto and also conduct Wagner's Mastersingers Overture, as Hull Phil hands him the baton as a 60th birthday present. Martin shares his 60th birthday year with Hull Philharmonic's musical director, Andrew Penny, who marks the occasion by selecting the evening's programme. A champion of British music, Andrew has chosen Symphonic Variations by Hubert Parry, and Brigg Fair, which he regards as one of the finest works by Yorkshire-born Frederick Delius. Before the performance, the original folk song on which the latter piece was based will be sung unaccompanied by Brigg folk singer Tom Glossop.
