Endellion String Quartet - 40th Anniversary Concert archiveFormed in 1979 the Endellion regularly tour North and South America, Australasia, the Far East and all the most important European musical centres. The Endellion String Quartet is celebrating its 40th Anniversary during the 2018-2019 Season. The Quartet is renowned as one of the finest in the world. Three of its original founding members continue to play in the quartet ? and Ralph de Souza joined them thirty-two years ago. The Endellion is marking its fortieth year by commissioning Sally Beamish, Prach Boondiskulchok, Jonathan Dove and Giles Swayne each to write a short piece for string quartet. The unrivalled greatness, rich variety and sheer volume of the quartet repertoire have long nourished the Endellion's longevity. However, there are relatively few short pieces for string quartet and the Endellion would like to contribute to making good this deficit. The London premi?res of these pieces will take place at Wigmore Hall on 29 May 2019. This concert starts with Beethoven's masterly Op.18 No.1 whose heartfelt slow movement was inspired by Romeo and Juliet. It ends with Schubert's ?Death and the Maiden' whose intensity and lyricism have profoundly touched its listeners from the moment it was first performed. In between, for their 40th Anniversary, the quartet present a series of several short pieces, newly commissioned and generously supported by Lark Music, Turner Sims Southampton and Brompton's Auctioneers.
