Details
Founded over a hundred years ago and first conducted by Dvorak, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra retains its distinctive sound to this day. The programme opens with Dvorak's spine-chilling version of a traditional folk tale, before Nicola Benedetti performs Tchaikovsky's great violin concerto. Martinu's three Estampes, performed to mark the 50th anniversary of his death, were his last completed orchestral works, and show his appealing and individual sound world. Janacek's dramatic symphonic poem, based on an epic tale of Cossack adventure, was composed during the First World War as the possibility of independence grew closer for his beloved homeland.
