Brahms's youthfully bumptious and celebratory Academic Festival Overture opens this concert. It closes with Mahler's Fourth Symphony, the shortest, smallest and arguably most popular of his symphonic works. Its finale - the soprano setting of the Wunderhorn song Das himmlische Leben - reflects a child's vision of heaven and was originally meant to round off the last movement of Mahler's Third Symphony. Sponsored in memory of the late Raymond Gooch.
