Details
Delius sketched his symphonic poem On the Mountains while on a walking holiday with Grieg near Bergen. The opening movement of Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto is full of tension and drama. The slow movement is a lyrical dialogue between the soloist and woodwinds, while the vivacious finale is a rondo, punctuated with quicksilver piano cadenzas. Strauss' opulent yet tongue in cheek portrait of himself as the hero of the title shows the composer bursting with confidence in his own powers. The music portrays his home life and his battle with critics, before he finally settles down to peace and artistic productivity.
