The BBC Concert Orchestra is one of the country s most versatile ensembles. For more than half a century it has been the house orchestra for BBC Radio 2 s Friday Night is Music Night and gives regular broadcasts on BBC Radio 3. Its work can be heard on soundtracks to many BBC TV programmes including Blue Planet, Frozen Planet and Human Planet. Friday Night is Music Night was first broadcast in 1953 on the BBC Light Programme. The same year saw the Queen's Coronation, the Conquest of Everest and the end of sweet rationing. Its brief was ?to create a Friday-night show which would help people relax after the week's hard work and put them in the right mood for a happy weekend'. Its heady mix of classical and popular works, film music, songs from the shows, opera and operetta has since entertained millions across the globe.
