Details
Armonico Consort was formed in 2001 and specialises in baroque and renaissance music. Elgar's cantata The Spirit of England dates from 1917 and is one of his last works. Very different in mood from the Elgar of the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, the piece is the composer's horrified response to the suffering and misery of the First World War. It is a setting of three of Laurence Binyon's war poems: The Fourth of August, To Women and For the Fallen. In the second half or the concert, Armonico Consort and Orchestra perform Brahms's German-language setting of the Requiem, begun in 1865 when the composer was mourning the death of his mother.
