The Arcanto Quartet enters its tenth year in 2011, and their two concerts at Aldeburgh seem tailormade to their assured, sophisticated and bighearted approach. Berg’s work was written in the heat of an illicit love affair to which he famously incorporated countless references in his tautly organised score - ‘a small monument to a great love’. If these secret ciphers don’t reveal themselves easily in performance, the ardent lyricism, and pervasive ecstatic, often feverish mood of the music leaves the listener in no doubt as to the work’s subject matter. This, then, the storm before the calm - the programme concludes with the seamless melodic inspiration and hushed serenity of Mozart’s masterpiece. Two composers at the peak of their powers, five of today’s most vaunted chamber musicians.
