Details
Written at the beginning of the Second World War, the oratorio is a response to a real incident: the shooting of a Nazi official in 1938 by a desperate young Polish Jew, which triggered terrible retribution. While Tippett draws from the tradition of Bach's Passions, he uses Negro spirituals to highlight key moments of emotional tension. Running time approx. 1 hour 15 mins
