Details
Written at the beginning of the Second World War, the oratorio is a response to a real incident: the shooting of a Nazi official in 1938 by a desperate young Polish Jew, which triggered terrible retribution. While Tippett draws from the tradition of Bach's Passions, he uses Negro spirituals to highlight key moments of emotional tension.
