Severini is best known as a key figure of the Italian Futurist movement; a group of artists and writers who expressed the dynamism of the modern world by representing machines and figures in motion. This exhibition examines the artist's work in the key decade of his career, from 1910 to 1920. It traces Severini's development from his early Post Impressionist paintings of Paris, through key works of his Futurist period, to his adoption of Cubism and, at the end of his career, his turn to a style ordered by classical principals and geometric form. The exhibition includes oil paintings and works on paper, and draws on the full range of Severini's subject matter: dancers, abstractions, urban scenes, war images, portraits and still life. Kirstie Hamilton, Assistant Curator of Modern Art, will be discussing the work of Gino Severini on Friday 31 March at 13:00, at the Graves Art Gallery.
