Fusing physical theatre, hip hop dance and spoken word, Elephant in the Room is an explosive solo that explores the mental health crisis and the phenomenon of toxic masculinity. Malaolu takes you on one man's journey, navigating his daily life and socio-economic status whilst coping or not coping with mental health issues. The show is an intimate portrayal of the challenges facing working class men of colour in these conditions. Aided by a live musical score, Malaolu's performance is delivered with a fusion of high impact hip-hop and contemporary dance styles, confessional spoken-word and light touches of humour to create a personal and relatable tale of mental health crisis. The show unapologetically confronts the elephant in the room. Malaolu states, 'I aim to deepen the narrative of mental health issues from the perspective of a young black man, to spark conversation and touch those who may have different backgrounds, but share common experiences'.
