Details
Auschwitz,1941. Ten men await an agonising death by starvation in an underground bunker. Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish priest, volunteers to take the place of one of the victims. The play explores the events leading up to this extraordinary self-sacrifice and the subsequent survival of Franek, the Polish sergeant whose life was saved. Twice more he is rescued from certain death in dramatic circumstances. After the war he returns home to Poland, now under Communist rule. Criticized for allowing Kolbe to take his place, he faces hostile questions from a journalist. Burdened with guilt, he rebuilds his life with Lenna, his wife, but this is overshadowed by a tragically unexpected twist in the tale. This hard-hitting story explores the heights and depths of human experience in a passion play for our time.
