Details
Wood Magic is an account told, as far as possible, in Elgar's own words or those of his friends and contemporaries, how he came to write the four masterpieces with which his composing life virtually closed in 1918-1919. He had written no chamber music for over 30 years and yet, in the course of a year, he produced these outstanding compositions. Upon hearing this music, filled with nostalgic regret, tenderness and ghostly mystery, his wife commented that it was unlike anything else Elgar had ever written.
