Details
The production is set in a science faculty common room in Tokyo, where researchers and students talk in passing about the controversial work they are doing into genetic manipulation. Initially, the drama students felt that they lacked the authority to speak as scientists, so as part of their preparation they have been following recent science news stories and working closely with the University’s biology department in order to help them to embrace their roles as postgraduate researchers. Hirata’s plays do not state anything explicitly; instead, the audience is invited to construct their own meanings from the conversations of his characters. The Scientifically Minded opens up the debate on genetic manipulation and invites the audience to consider the ethics of scientific development.
