Set against the backdrop of the 1912 miners strike in Nottinghamshire, The Daughter-in-Law sees Luther and his new wife Minnie struggle to warm to married life. After finding out her husband of just seven weeks has got another girl pregnant, Minnie has a fight on her hands, not only to keep Luther from her rival but more importantly from his overbearing mother. As the strike continues and tensions reach boiling point Minnie feels her recently inherited wealth is coming between them and takes drastic action to resolve the situation.
