Doctor Korczak's Example archiveDoctor Korczak's Example tells the extraordinary story of Dr Janusz Korczak, director of an orphanage for Jewish children in 1940s Warsaw. Korczak created a unique children's republic in the orphanage, run along democratic lines, but his experiment was brought abruptly to an end in the gas chambers of Treblinka. His ground-breaking work with children was discovered after his death and became the basis of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Set in Korczak's orphanage in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942, the famous Polish paediatrician and children's author Dr Janusz Korczak is struggling to bring up his young orphans to believe in justice and good as the Nazi threat encroaches increasingly on their daily lives. His biggest challenge is recent arrival Adzio who rebels against Korczak's faith in utopia and his belief that, 'it's fine, all's fine'... Based on fact, Dr Korczak's Example is a warm, humorous and moving story exploring questions of right and wrong, idealism and pragmatism and how we bring up children in a complex world where moral absolutes are hard to find. It explores Korczak's attempts to maintain justice, tolerance and humanity in the face of totalitarian oppression.
