Rossini's 1817 opera Armida reveals the composer at his dazzling best. A Neapolitan opera seria with a libretto inspired by the 16th century Italian poet Tasso's La Gerusalemme liberata, it tells the story of the sorceress Armida, who lures men to her island prison. She has been sent by dark forces to undermine the paladin knights, but has fallen in love with one of them, Rinaldo.
