Details
The Spalding Suite is a dance theatre show inspired by the UK's basketball subculture.
And I remember the leather ball aflame... now localized comet sailing, the most fragrant fire trails tailing its arch towards the hoop. Beneath that leather star, sensed a joining of we star gazers, a twenty-limbed creature of mixed culture and race, palms burnt united by this stunt... The show explores how the myths and urban legends of the game cross over the ocean to intersect with the dreams and aspirations of players here and how the forces of gravity and ageing affect those dreams. Mixing poetry, spoken word, storytelling and live music with elements of hip-hop and choreography influenced by the game, The Spalding Suite examines the British response to a very American game. Five performers animate poetry written by Inua Ellams, Bohdan Piasecki, Jacob Sam-La Rose, Roger Robinson, Nick Makoha and Nii Parkes.
