The Russian pianist, Grigory Sokolov, is accorded almost divine obeisance in musical circles. Winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 16 his international career was blocked for years. He is emerging as the natural successor to Gilels and Richter. "A recital by Grigory Sokolov is like a vision of a lost age of Russian pianism" (The Guardian). The heir to such legendary artists as Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter, Sokolov is a phenomenal artist, considered by some to be today’s greatest living pianist. His pianism transforms the instrument into a force of nature; he is capable of the most delicate filigree detail at one extreme, and overpowering strength and magnitude at the other.
