A woman comes from a city in the south to lecture in a village amid the snowbound north. After the lecture an old man who has been sleeping introduces himself. She is to be his guest for the night. And so she moves in with Hadar, a man who in the last stages of cancer. There is only one other house close by where Hadar's brother Olof lives, also on his own, and dying of heart disease. Neither brother will consent to die, for that would give the other the satisfaction of outliving him. In the days that follow the woman acts as both nurse and confessor to each of them, uncovering the tissue of lies and self-deceptions that keeps the ailing brothers alive in a bond of mutual loathing. Recommended for ages 12 plus.
