A dramatic visit to the past. Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated each year on the 27 January - the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau (2010 is the 65th anniversary of this event). The date was chosen as a reminder of the horrific acts of persecution committed throughout WWII, but also raises awareness of more contemporary acts of racism and violence throughout the world. The City contributes to the national day of remembrance with a service held each year in the city centre and also, more recently, with exhibitions, films and drama. Once again the Key Theatre will provide the focus for the theatrical elements of the city wide events and next year will present Acts of Hope - an evening of music and drama that will explore this years Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s theme for 2010 - Legacy of Hope. The evening will include contributions from a growing number of local schools and colleges including Thomas Deacon Academy, The Deepings School, Stanground College, Jack Hunt School, St John Fisher School, Peterborough Regional College, the Gleed Boys’ School in Spalding and the Fenland Arts Youth Theatre in March. Each year the students create a wealth of imagery, through thought-provoking and imaginative and innovative theatre. The pieces provide a great insight into the Holocaust, seen through the eyes of young people. The work raises their awareness of the past but also provides hope for the future in that their understanding and knowledge will ensure that future generations will learn tolerance and strive to live in peace with one another. A message that is as relevant today as ever.
