DARE (Digital Arts Research & Enterprise) from the University of Greenwich present a show in two parts in response to Rozanne Hawksley: War and Memory, using visual projection, music and performance in an emotive, immersive experience. Alev Adil starts the evening with his performance piece, Memory in the Dead Zone, an exploration of temporality and conflict set in the Cypriot border zone that runs through Nicosia, the last divided city in Europe. The evening concludes with, Prisoner, Fahrudin Nuno Salihbegovic's retelling of the story of Medea, reflecting on the agonising themes of confinement and guilt.
Memory in the Dead Zone - Set in the border zone that runs through Nicosia, the last divided city in Europe, at its southernmost periphery in Cyprus, Memory in the Dead Zone is both a multimedia retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and an autobiographical performance exploring contested memories and war. Moving between different pasts, between Cyprus and a host of unnamed cities, Memory in the Dead Zone celebrates becoming diasporic through poetry, myth, home movies, photographs and all the digital detritus of the 21st century.
Prisoner - The Studio for Electronic Theatre (http://www.setlab.eu) performance
Prisoner is a contemporary retelling of the story of Medea, a mythical heroine whom the history of theatre, literature and art has endowed with the horrible crimes she never committed. Scarred by war and exile, falsely accused and imprisoned, awaiting her sentence, Medea remembers... The performance is inspired by the Rozanne Hawksley's work Prisoner. The agonizing and horrifying experience of war presented in a form of a mutilated and dehumanized women's body, speaks in Hawksley's sculpture in its own language about the unspeakable. Using techniques inspired by the ?theatre of cruelty', with the physical bodies intertwined with digital imagery, this performance seeks to reestablish the missing emotional link between the images of war and our spoiled perception of them in the self-obsessed culture of I Me Mine. The performances will be preceded by curator tours of War Artists at Sea, led by Dr Melanie Vandenbrouck, and Rozanne Hawksley War and Memory, led by Dr Amy Miller
