The Trouble with Harry/New Comedy - Queer Theatre at the Lyric archiveThe Trouble with Harry is a thrilling new play by award winning Australian playwright Lachlan Philpott, telling the story of Eugenia Falleni, the notorious ?ManWoman' of post-colonial Sydney. An Italian immigrant, Falleni lived much of her life as Harry Crawford and served time in prison for murdering her wife, Annie Birkett. Falleni enjoys a unique place in Sydney's bawdy history and her story continues to fascinate. Philpott brings his idiosyncratic take on the story to the stage, questioning heteronormative versions of history and engaging with untold lesbian and transgender stories. Through the Falleni/Crawford case, he takes a look at assumptions of gender that resonate with contemporary debates. New Comedy by Brenda Murphy - It's Belfast, Winter 2010. The big freeze bites hard but one young man is feeling the cold more than others, as unrequited love gets him entangled in strange new queer world that makes no sense to him whatsoever. A darkly comic and irreverent tale of being on the outside looking in, this work in progress is presented as a staged reading before going into full production in 2012. Theatre is possibly the most exciting and creative arena right now for exploring LGBT issues, histories, ideas and real experience. And we're delighted to present rehearsed readings of two new queer plays at Lyric Theatre, including an exclusive preview of Brenda Murphy's new comedy, commissioned by OUTBURST with the support of The Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
