Lenin said, "I will give the people bread and circuses." In a collective near St Petersburg today, bread is a problem. As Pania, the bread seller, is preparing to open her shop for business, her new assistant, the young and disabled Inna is determined to prove herself a genuinely useful member of the community. She resists the attempts of others to run her life for her and demonstrates a perceptiveness beyond the reach of her supposed betters as she restores respect to the local tramp who has been written off as worse than worthless by everybody else. James McDonald is a disabled playwright. In this play, he tackles head-on issues of prejudice, with great courage and much savage humour.
