Don't You Leave Me Here archive1906. In the back room of a brothel in Storyville, New Orleans, Ferd "Jelly Roll" Morton and Tony Jackson earn what little money they can playing for Gypsy Schaeffer and her girls, whilst desperately dreaming of a better life. Kicked out at 16 for playing the "Devil's music" the young man who will become one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time is desperate for recognition. Meanwhile Jackson struggles to come to terms with his sexuality - something which threatens to bring their friendship to an abrupt and violent end. Featuring classic songs by Jelly Roll Morton, including Animule Dance and The Crave, Don't You Leave Me Here follows two of the originators of jazz from the greasy creep-joints of New Orleans to the hot clubs of Chicago. As the years roll past fate deals a cruel hand to both of them but still the music plays on in Clare Brown's powerful play of heartache, hard times and the blues.
