Details
The sinking of the Nantucket whaleship Essex by an enraged spermwhale in 1820 inspired the classic novel, Moby Dick. But whereas the attack formed the climax of Melville's story, it is only the beginning of this remarkable journey of fear, hope and survival for the shipwrecked whalemen, left to fight for their lives in three small boats in the middle of the Pacific. As they battle the mighty ocean, their wives, so used to life without the daily influence of men, pioneer a radical society without them.
