In
The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit, Gerald Barry turns Handel's oratorio
The Triumph of Time and Truth on its head. A trapped Beauty has to choose between the somewhat distant rewards of Time and the more immediate delights of Pleasure. From the sober allegory Barry and his librettist Meredity Oakes fashion a frenetic, absurdist adventure of great precision, virtuosity and wit. The production is preceded by a prologue taken from the Handel Oratorio. Commissioned by Poolbeg Productions for Channel 4 television and broadcast in 1996.
